Paper 22: Urban safety and security: Lessons from the last two decades and emergent issues

Resources

The present report synthesizes some of the most important lessons on urban safey to date. These include to make prevention a priority; to recognize the importance of public space; to realize that without municipal leadership, crime, conflict and violence reduction and prevention plans cannot succeed; to create multi-sectoral partnerships for change within government structures; to work with civil society actors as co-producers of security for all; and to support better data-collection and analysis, research, and exchange of promising practice. The report is a synthesis of the conference  “Reviewing the State of Safety in World Cities: Safer Cities +20” which took place in Geneva on 6 - 8 July 2016.
