Opening Ceremony: What is Peace ?
14 Oct

Join us for the opening ceremony of the 11th edition of Geneva Peace Week, which will take place at the Palais des Nations, launching a week of profound dialogue and action around the theme “What is Peace?” As global challenges such as inequality, conflict, and political tensions intensify, this theme offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the meaning of peace and explore solutions for building a more harmonious world.

Welcome Messages

The ceremony will begin with remarks from Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, and Dr. Annyssa Bellal, Executive Director of the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform. Both will set the stage for a week of discussions aimed at advancing peacebuilding efforts on a global scale. The event will be moderated by Ahmad Fawzi, a renowned communications strategist and former spokesperson for Kofi Annan.

Official Address

We are honored to have Eva Herzog, President of the Swiss Council of States, deliver an official address on behalf of Switzerland.

Video Message and Panel Discussion

A special video message from Guy Ryder, Under-Secretary-General for Policy at the UN Executive Office of the Secretary-General, will offer insights on the UN's approach to contemporary peace challenges.

Following the video message, a panel discussion will take place featuring distinguished experts:

  • Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
  • Helga Maria Schmid, former Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)

This discussion will explore the diverse ways in which peace can be nurtured amidst global turmoil, economic divides, and the shifting dynamics of international cooperation.

Youth Engagement

Students from the Peacebuilding Initiative will present a Youth Statement, followed by a lively engagement with the panelists. This segment will highlight the critical role of young people in shaping the future of peace and justice around the world.

Closing Remarks

The ceremony will close with remarks from Ambassador Thomas Greminger, Executive Director of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), reaffirming the importance of Geneva as a key location for international peace efforts.

The Soul of Fado: Weaving Peace Through Music at Geneva Peace Week 2024

As we prepare to gather for Geneva Peace Week 2024, the opening ceremony will highlight the special performance from Marco Rodrigues, a recognized Fado singer, at the United Nations in Geneva on 14 October 2024. This choice of musical expression is not just a cultural showcase but a reflection on the connections between peace, heritage, and the universal experiences of migration.

Cocktail Reception

After the ceremony, guests are invited to a cocktail reception at the Restaurant Vieux Bois (Pregny Gate) from 18:00 to 20:00, providing an opportunity for networking and further conversation.
